notes from
the MUCK . . .

How does your garden grow? With muck, muck and more muck! I spent much of today finishing the final muck box and then shifting muck from one box to the next. The first box, which the Big Lad is enthusiastically pointing out, has been rotting down for two years now and once we’d removed the top quarter of unrotted material, we found we’d hit the pay dirt.

A Retrospective

So it's been a year. And what a year! I know that it's hard to remember what life was like before the Muck existed, but it was actually only one short year ago that we entered your world with Jeff's inaugural post. (OK, technically, our anniversary was Sept. 23, but you may have noticed that we're not always right on top of things here). Since then we've undergone two site renovations, brought Mariah Carey and Andre the Giant together, had a kid, and inspired countless others to get into the blogging business.

To celebrate all this, we've decided to take a brief look back at what the past year has brought us and, more to the point, what we (the editorial staff) have brought you (the fan base). We put together an elite selection committee, which trawled through our archives identifying those posts that exemplify the best of what each of us has to offer. The committee nominated five posts by each author, and now we would like you to help us pick the best of the best.

The three polls below contain our five nominations for the best posts by Jeff, Ben, and Matthew. Each poll entry is a link to the respective post. Please pick your favorite for each author. The poll will remain open until the close of business Monday (Charlottesville time) to give each of you the time you will need to ponder your selection. Of course, there's also no limit to the number of times you can vote, so you needn't think too long about it. Also, if you have a particular favorite that was not nominated, you may "write-in" a vote in the comments.

This is a "sticky post." It will remain at the top of the page until the polls close. New posts will appear beneath, so be sure to scroll down so as not to miss any new content. We know you'd hate to miss any new content. And now, a drumroll please. The nominees are:

(Polls closed)

Show Me the Way to Go Home
