notes from
the MUCK . . .

How does your garden grow? With muck, muck and more muck! I spent much of today finishing the final muck box and then shifting muck from one box to the next. The first box, which the Big Lad is enthusiastically pointing out, has been rotting down for two years now and once we’d removed the top quarter of unrotted material, we found we’d hit the pay dirt.

Stop the Press.

I spent some time in Thailand and everyday there I would buy a newspaper. I usually looked at the sport section but on one particular day I was grabbed by the front page which told of an elephant that had fallen down a man hole in down town Bangkok. There was a picture of the elephant being lifted out of the manhole. It was a beautiful moment where I really appreciated I was in a distant and exotic land, and I curse myself for not keeping it. I can't remember whether the damn thing lived or not which bothers me quite a bit.

Today, that buzz returned. Among the headlines informing us that Prince William has taken up Bingo and that the world is being consumed by drought, I saw on the front page that elephants are now on the menu of lions.

Film exists of several hunts that have culminated in a group of lions bringing down, killing, and devouring a young, but by no means a baby, elephant. The action is said to be the most shocking footage of nature yet seen...though I wonder if the aftermath may run it close:

"One large male reclines with all four paws in the air. He does not bother to stand to urinate or defecate, which he does noisily, his elephant dinner having apparently given him bad diarrhoea".

Ah, the beauty of nature.
