notes from
the MUCK . . .

How does your garden grow? With muck, muck and more muck! I spent much of today finishing the final muck box and then shifting muck from one box to the next. The first box, which the Big Lad is enthusiastically pointing out, has been rotting down for two years now and once we’d removed the top quarter of unrotted material, we found we’d hit the pay dirt.

Picklin' It

Last night I was listening to a song called "Southern State," by Bright Eyes. This song is about Athens, GA, and it's excellent. Right now it pretty much sums up my very existence. It also got me thinking about city songs in general. I've always really liked them. There's something really cool about any song that can capture the big personality of a city that's basically just a place where a ton of little personalities run around and drink coffee and pump gas and stuff. What are some of the best city songs?

Here's a short list of ones that come to my own mind:

London Calling - The Clash
Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - They Might Be Giants
Straight Outta Compton - N.W.A.
Viva Las Vegas - Elvis
New York, New York - Frank Sinatra
Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees (there's a video tape somewhere of me singing this song when I was 8)
Streets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen
