there are 87 entries listed in robert altman's 'director' filmography on imdb (a lot of that is tv). sadly, that impressive number will not have the chance to get any bigger. altman died last night for reasons i haven't heard but probably just because he was an old fart. clearly i'm not feeling very elegiac right now, but i did want to put something up here in memoriam because i happen to be a huge fan. i always thought of altman as america's most european filmmaker, but that's doing him a disservice. in actuality, he was probably one of the most american.
go rent his movies! and check out any interviews or commentaries that feature on the discs. he was a very smart, and very funny man.
here's a list of the ones i've seen, in no particular order. even if i don't like some of them, they are all examples of his unique vision. and yes, even popeye...
dr. t and the women
vincent and theo
come back to the five and dime, jimmy dean, jimmy dean
the long goodbye
maccabe and mrs. miller
and i've got secret honor checked out right now. maybe tonight's the night to watch it.
