notes from
the MUCK . . .

How does your garden grow? With muck, muck and more muck! I spent much of today finishing the final muck box and then shifting muck from one box to the next. The first box, which the Big Lad is enthusiastically pointing out, has been rotting down for two years now and once we’d removed the top quarter of unrotted material, we found we’d hit the pay dirt.

Turn That Frown Upside Down!

So the Virginia General Assembly is apparently debating a resolution that would officially apologize for slavery, and naturally this entirely sensible and long overdue proposal is creating controversy in Richmond. This whole article is depressing (and don't even read the comments), but I'd like to highlight the remarks of Albemarle County Republican Committee Chairman Keith Drake, who opposes the apology resolution and says
a resolution expressing appreciation “to recognize the significant contributions of slaves” would be more appropriate and positive.
And I, for one, agree. Why shouldn't we be more positive about it? There's really no reason to be gloomy gusses about that whole slavery kerfuffle. So thanks, slaves! You guys were really swell and did a lot of great work! We owe you one!1

1 Not literally, of course. Technically, we don't owe you anything. Reparations are entirely out of the question and you should stop being so negative all the time.
