notes from
the MUCK . . .

How does your garden grow? With muck, muck and more muck! I spent much of today finishing the final muck box and then shifting muck from one box to the next. The first box, which the Big Lad is enthusiastically pointing out, has been rotting down for two years now and once we’d removed the top quarter of unrotted material, we found we’d hit the pay dirt.

Why is the Republican Party so much better at negative campaigning than the Democratic Party? It isn't that Democrats don't try. It's that Republicans are experts at repeating a lie so often that the lie is accepted as truth. And if the lie isn't accepted as truth, enough doubt is cast so as to damage the Democrat's reputation, which is the goal anyway. Democrats are somehow incapable of successfully executing this feat of tomfoolery.

Take this recent attack by Sarah Palin. She gets it out there, again, that Obama has been "palling around with terrorists," and I guarantee you that some people are going to believe it. I won't spend time debunking that charge because I'd be preaching to the choir, and because it's so obviously ridiculous. But just two minutes of research will show that the supposed Obama-Ayers connection is really no connection at all, and just two minutes of independent thought will lead to the conclusion that McPalin is playing dirty tricks of the lowest variety.

Let's not mince words. These people are crying treason on Barack Obama. They want people to believe that he's dangerous, that he hates America, that he's friends with the Evil-doers. None of this is true, but it's all they got. They know they're going to lose and they will stop at nothing to turn things around in the final stretch. What's annoying is that now some of us have to have this silly fucking argument with our conservative friends and relatives about whether Barack Obama is actually friends with terrorists. You know it's going to happen at least once, if it hasn't already.

So, going back to the original question, why can't Democrats do the same thing? If the Obama camp had, instead of taking the high road, run an attack campaign on Palin's pregnant teenage daughter, the whole thing would have backfired. But Palin can get away with linking Obama to terrorists?

I mean really.

So what is it? Are right-leaning voters simply more gullible? I don't want to think so. Yet, I have trouble coming up with an alternative theory.

Let's be honest, folks. Think back on all the stupid shit you've heard Republicans say. Think back on all the stupid shit they've tried to pull. This is the party of banning books, the party of posting the Ten Commandments in the courtroom, the party of impeaching a president because he cheated on his wife. This is the party of Fox news. There's a common denominator here and it ain't pretty: Republicans are not very bright.

There, I said it. We've all been thinking it for years, so let's just get it out there. I know it sounds harsh, but think of it this way - Republicans are either as shallow, hypocritical, and cowardly as they appear to be...or they're just plain dumb.

You can call me an asshole, but I'm just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt.
